Personalized Nutrition

The health and nutrition industry tries to sell us one size fits all diets, assuming that many of us can thrive off of one way of eating or that one way is the best way.

Meanwhile nutritionists and dietitians compel us with individualized eating programs but spend little to no time investing in getting to know there clients. Authors, nutritionists and doctors want to prescribe cookie cutter programs because it means way less work. If you throw ideas out that work for the average person than it will inevitably hit enough people and stick for long enough to make it seem legitimate.

When was the last time a nutritionist asked you what your favourite childhood food was? There is a vast network of connections between our history of eating, our emotions and cultural norms. All of it plays part in how we are able to make changes in our patterns of eating.

Part of our philosophy here at IKO LAB is to try and not compare ourselves to others. That includes us not comparing you to any other client. While we may recognize patterns from the general public and learn from them, the best source of pertinent information and strategies to help you, is you.

So while we are a deeply science based service we are also a deeply personal service. This means much more work for us and much more communication between us and you.

The things that interest people the most are the tactics that illicit sensation of change. This is why fasting is all the rage. You do it, you FEEL hungry and since you feel something it resonates as purposeful positive change. Its easier to assume it is working. But that is just a trick. The cold hard truth of life is that long term, healthy change happens on longer time lines and usually without much awareness of it happening at any given moment. BUT communication can be a very good replacement for that. We try and use it in order to practice paying more attention to the small wins. The things that happen daily. This is how we get people to create new habits that mean something to them.

All services begin with a 60-90 minute consultation. Before our meeting we send a few different questionnaires to get our bearings on your situation. We like to go through the answers with you and expand on any areas that might guide us to understanding you a bit more.

The next step is for us to set up a step guide for you for the first week or two. We have seen that setting up for achievement is the best way to start so our first step guide is just a matter of overcoming any hesitancy and making sure we can start off on the right foot. Even still we leave room for adjustments. Adjustments are the key to success.

Then depending on the timeline you choose to work with us, we will either give you an evolving program for a short period of time with some tips on how to continue or we will go step by step together, checking in every few days to assess how things are going. Assess – adjust (if need be) and reassess!

We prefer to introduce things slowly rather than dump everything in front of you all at once. So the longer we work with you, the more information we end up getting about who you are and how you work with challenges. And the better you get to know us! Nothing builds consistency than trust and understanding. We have seen this in our personal training programs for the last 15 years. Its a two way street. This is not a doctors office!
