Self Defense

I have been teaching self defence, in one form or another for about 30 years. Over that time I have whittled it down from an art to a system. The longer you teach martial arts the more you realize how narrow the scope of movements is that actually work.

So our classes focus on simplicity, efficiency and repetition. You can take 10 classes and walk away with about 10 basic movements that relate to the most common attacks and then practice them on your own to attain the necessary reflexes for them to work. Or you can train longer and work on the repetition and fine tuning in the studio.

While I try to teach the movements that work for most people, developing your own system based on your stature and your strengths is much more effective. Self defence that works is about bypassing the inevitable fear and anxiety that comes in confrontations. It is not about trying to erase it. Through drilling the smallest, easiest movement patterns that work, you build reflex. These can come out without you thinking about it. It has saved me in my own confrontations as it has some of my students.

I have had people come in and want to learn one specific defence and practiced that for weeks and I have also had students for upwards of 15 years who have moved through the system and now practice the more colourful, technical moves from specific martial arts.

The basics come from an accumulation of techniques stemming from multiple styles, including; Krav Maga, Karate, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Ba Gua and Tai Chi. These are all styles I have learned or mastered over the last 40 years.
